My Thoughts on Case Western Reserve University

by Kaylen H.

Over the weekend, I took a campus tour of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), which was informative. Case Western Reserve University is one of the most prominent colleges in Cleveland. It’s most widely known for its engineering and medical programs. Students come from all around the world to study at Case. Personally, it wasn’t my taste, but it is still one of the best schools in the Cleveland area. One thing I can say about Case is that they give students a lot of different opportunities for success.

One of the big reasons why I didn't like Case was because of its big focus on Science and Technology. When I go to college I plan to focus more on the humanities than the sciences. Because of that, I think it would be better to attend a school that has a greater focus on the humanities. My second reason may seem childish and slightly biased, but it’s way too close to home. When I think of attending a college or university, I always think of somewhere other than Cleveland, because for me if I’m too close to home I really won’t get the college experience I want. Lastly, I’m not interested in attending Case because of how close to the city it is. Though the landscape around Case is beautiful, I like colleges and universities that are closer to nature. Case Western Reserve University is an amazing school, but it doesn't have what I'm looking for in a college

There were some things that I liked about Case. One of them being how innovative the school is. During the presentation, the presenter talked about the Think[box], which is a building on the Case campus with all types of different tools that students can use to bring their ideas to life. This is something I found interesting and very cool. Another thing I liked about Case is its history of how it was originally 2 schools, Case Institute of Technology, and Western Reserve University merged in 1967 to form the Case Western Reserve University we know today. The last thing I found cool was how Case is close to 3 big hospitals and the programs that Case has with those hospitals because it allows students to be able to connect and use their resources to be able to become better and succeed in the future.

Though I can’t personally see myself attending Case, it’s still a good school where students can gain a lot from. This would be a choice school for anyone who has lived and grew up in Cleveland and if they are looking for a college that is science and technology-focused. This could also be a college for you even if you are more into the humanities like me. Although Case is more notable for its technology and medical departments, its humanities studies department is also something of note.  If you’re looking for a school that is close to a city and is about 5-15 minutes away from downtown this could also be a really good option. Another reason why you should look into the case is how close it is to some of Cleveland’s attractions like the Cleveland Art Museum and the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. Another good thing I can say about Case is how strong it seems the community is. My tour guide said that one of the big reasons why they choose Case is because of the people and how supportive they are. This is what a lot of people look for in a college supportive community. As you can see there are many reasons why you should consider Case.

Overall, Case Western Reserve University is an interesting and good College, but it’s just not for me. There are many things that I found interesting about Case between the academics and the campus itself, but for me when it comes to choosing the college that's best for you, it doesn't matter if the college is good or not, what matters is if you see yourself being happy and successful at that school. Lastly, I want to say thank you to Case for showing me around their beautiful campus and giving me the chance to learn more about what I want from a college or university.
